NZ Government Web Standards

Effective 17 March 2025, there are 2 web standards that government organisations need to meet, the Web Accessibility Standard and the Web Usability Standard.

Digital Accessibility Community of Practice

Join the Digital Accessibility Community of Practice (DACoP) to hear presentations from people working in accessibility. Bring your questions to receive advice and guidance in a supportive, informal group setting.
Web Standards effective from March 2025

The Government Chief Digital Officer (GCDO) has updated the NZ Government Web Standards to incorporate the Web Content Accessibility Guideline (WCAG) 2.2 and other improvements.
Web Accessibility Standard 1.2

All public service departments and non-public service departments in the Executive branch must meet the NZ Government Web Accessibility Standard 1.2 from 17 March 2025.

Web Usability Standard 1.4

All public service departments and non-public service departments in the Executive branch must meet the NZ Government Web Usability Standard 1.4 from 17 March 2025.

Web Standards Self-Assessments

Self-assessment helps government agencies understand how accessible and easy to use their websites are, and what the main user experience issues are.
Web Standards risk assessment

The Web Accessibility Standard and Web Usability Standard require that NZ Government organisations be prepared to assess and report on their conformance with those Standards. This includes submitting a risk assessment and management plan regarding any areas of non-conformance.
Web Standards Cabinet Minute and Paper

In 2003, Cabinet directed core government agencies to implement the New Zealand Government Web Standards. The Web Standards are made up of the Web Accessibility Standard and Web Usability Standard.
